Nakoda Elementary School (NES) is a kindergarten to grade 5 First Nations community school located in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, west of Calgary, Alberta in the community of Morley. At NES we believe in the value of music and its importance to the culture of the Stoney Nakoda First Nations. The CBC Music Class Challenge allowed us to demonstrate the importance of music to our culture, and to have fun doing so. Drawing inspiration from our friends A Tribe Called Red, we mixed Pow Wow drumming and dancing with the song Treat You Better. Through this project, we explored the connections between our emotions and rhythm, melody and harmony. Playing music together not only teaches us expression, form and other musical principles, but it also helps us discover our own voice. A big thank you to Chris Pegram for his recorded contribution on this track, ALL the grade 5 classes for embracing this project, and the parents for appreciating the importance of music in culture. NES is working to develop talented and confident musical children who will grow into musical adults. Thank you CBC for helping us on this journey. Visit the NES Music Program Soundcloud and Vimeo websites to listen to more projects and recordings prepared and performed by the students at NES.
